        MASHA Academy Guidelines
Suggested guidelines for all shows sanctioned by MASHA
THESE RULES WILL APPLY TO ANY SHOW HELD IN MISSISSIPPI!

Academy Division
Purpose
To expose beginner riders to the joys of showing at an affordable cost.
To increase new interest in the show horse industry.
To encourage the student to improve his/her riding ability.

General
Two Divisions:  Academy & Academy Showmanship (Showrider)

All Academy classes are to be judged on the ability of the RIDER to control and show
their horse to the best advantage.
Riders and Horse Owners must be current
members of MASHA in order to participate in any MASHA sponsored show.

ACADEMY CLASSES are judged on Basic equitation skills, using correct diagonals and
leads. Horses are not to be judged! Horses in the Academy classes MUST be lesson
horses used regularly in a professionally operated lesson program. These horses must
display the characteristics of a lesson horse.

ACADEMY SHOWMANSHIP CLASSES should be judged on the rider’s horsemanship
ability. The horse is not to be judged, but rather the rider’s ability to show and control
the horse. For example, speed, placement in the ring and collection of the horse are
important points.Horses in Academy Showmanship may be in a training program.

Academy Notes:
Headers are allowed in the Academy classes per the Judges discretion.

To insure the safety of other riders, any out of control horses will be immediately
excused. The judge must stop the class until the horse and rider have been assisted
out of the ring.

ACADEMY CLASSES
Riders
No full riding suits allowed. Jodhpurs, jodhpur boots and riding gloves are
recommended. Safety helmets, derby's or hats are optional. They may or may not be
required at the discretion of the show committee.

Riders must be participating in a professionally operated lesson program and show on a
lesson horse.

A rider who has shown in a regular division or in a full suit is prohibited from further
participation in the Academy division, with the exception of Driving classes.

Once a rider has shown in Walk/Trot/Canter classes, a return to Walk/Trot classes is
prohibited. You cannot show in Walk/Trot/Canter and Walk/Trot at the same show.

Academy riders may not show in any other division at the same show with the exception
of driving classes.

Horses
Horses in Academy classes MUST be lesson horses regularly used in a professionally
operated lesson program.

These horses MUST display the characteristics of such! Horses ARE NOT TO BE
JUDGED!

Horses may be owned or leased by the stable, or may be privately owned as long as
they are used regularly in a lesson program and are not in training.

Horses must be flat shod, no pads are permitted.

Horses may show in snaffle bridles with martingles. Pelham and curb type bits are
allowed at the discretion of the instructor. Please use caution when bitting horses for
beginners.

Flat cutback english saddles are to be used.

Braiding is prohibited, but hoof blacking is acceptable and encouraged.

School horses may cross enter into other classes; (i.e. Country or Show Pleasure).

Horses should not be in tail sets, nor any action devices used while on the show
grounds.

Academy Driving Classes
Drivers
Drivers may have competed in any riding classification, but can not have show in any
Open Driving class.  
Horses are not judged. Drivers are judged on their ability to drive and control the horse.

Horses
Horse maybe in training, and may be flat shod or have pads.

Buggies
Buggies must be two wheeled, single horse driven carts suitable for pleasure driving.


ACADEMY SHOWMANSHIP CLASSES
Show Rider Classes
Purpose
To provide suitable classes for advanced riders, who either is enrolled in a lesson
program or who own their own horse, to gain experience in an Academy-type
environment.

To provide suitable classes for Open or Performance type horses to be cross-entered
into an Academy-type classes so that their owner/rider may gain experience showing
their privately owned horse.

Show shoes with pad are acceptable in these classes.

General
MASHA will recommend to affiliated shows that Show Rider classes for Walk/Trot and
Walk/Trot/Canter be added within the Academy Division.

No age divisions will be necessary, or classes may be divided at the discretion of the
show committee.

SHOW RIDER EQUITATION CLASSES should be judged on advanced equitation skills,
but no pattern will be required.

SHOW RIDER PLEASURE CLASSES should be judged on the rider’s horsemanship
ability. The horse will be judged, as well as the rider’s ability to show and control the
horse.

To insure the safety of other riders, any out of control horses will be immediately
excused. The judge must stop the class until the horse and rider have been assisted
out of the ring.

Riders
Riders may wear full riding suits or academy-style clothing. Derbies, helmets and hats
are optional.

Riders may be enrolled in a professionally operated lesson program, have a privately
owned horse, or have their horse in training.

Once a rider has shown in the Show Rider Practice classes, he/she may not return to
the regular Academy classes. Once a rider has shown in the regular performance
classes, with the exception of driving classes, he/she may not return to Show Rider.

Academy Show Riders may not show in any other division at the same show with the
exception of driving classes.

Once a rider has shown in Show Rider Walk/Trot/Canter classes, a return to Show
Rider Walk/Trot classes is prohibited.

You cannot show in Walk/Trot/Canter and Walk/Trot at the same show.

Horses
Horses used in Show Rider classes may or may not be lesson-type horses.
Horses do not have to be used in a lesson program and they may be in training.

Horses may be flat shod or wear pads.

Horses may be shown in full bridles or snaffle bridles with martingales at the discretion
of the instructor.

Flat english cutback saddles are to be used.

Horses may be braided and hoof blacking is acceptable and encouraged.

Horses shown in Show Rider Practice classes may be cross-entered into any other
division at the show with a different rider. Open-type horses may be used in Show Rider
classes as long as they are safe and suitable for the rider.

Horses may be in tail sets and action devices are allowed while on the show grounds.
